
Biography
Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, April Ong is a percussionist recognized for her vibrant, expressive artistry and multifaceted performance career. She has appeared extensively throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer, with performances in major venues including Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall, Dewan Filharmonik, Menuhin Hall, and Splendor Amsterdam, among others.
April was a top prize winner in the 2023 PASIC Individual and Ensemble Competition (University Keyboard Division). As a member of the percussion chamber ensemble ACnd Duo, she earned First Prize at the Great Plains International Marimba Competition and was selected as the Boston Conservatory at Berklee Honors Chamber Ensemble for the 2023–2024 season. ACnd Duo has presented concerts across Asia, Europe, and the United States, including a recent European tour featuring performances in Amsterdam and Germany in collaboration with percussionist Joey Eng.
Recent performance highlights include featured appearances on faculty recitals at the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar, a collaboration with the New York Choreographic Institute, and a performance at Carnegie Hall as part of the Nuestros Sonidos festival, Our Future Voices: Music and Technology.
April is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Percussion Performance at The Juilliard School, where she studies with Greg Zuber, Dan Druckman, and Javier Diaz. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance, summa cum laude, from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, studying with Nancy Zeltsman, Samuel Solomon, and Jonathan Bisesi. Her early training in Malaysia included studies with Suyin Tan and Matthew Prendergast.
